Some moments in life are unforgettable—not just because they’re extraordinary, but because they remind us of who we are, what we love, and the icons who’ve shaped our journey. For all of us at Sixteen by Sixty-four, one such moment came on an unforgettable day in Goa when we had the immense honour of hosting Ustad Zakir Hussain in concert.
That evening wasn’t just special—it was sacred. From the moment Ustadji’s fingers touched the tabla, time seemed to slow down. The rhythms he created weren’t just heard—they were felt, deep within the soul. The Goan breeze, the warm glow of stage lights, the rapt silence of the crowd—everything was tuned to the beat of a living legend.
And yet, it was a simple tea break that etched itself most vividly into our memories.
During a quiet moment before the show, Ustadji sat backstage with a cup and saucer in hand, his tabla resting beside him. For those of us who grew up watching the iconic Taj Mahal Tea advertisement, it was surreal. It was exactly like that ad we had all seen as children—the same quiet elegance, the same grace, the same warmth.
A spontaneous whisper of “Wah Taj” escaped someone’s lips, and we all smiled, awestruck. It was as if time had folded in on itself, bringing our childhood admiration face-to-face with the man who had shaped it.
To be in his presence was a gift. To witness his genius up close was a blessing. That one day, that one evening, will forever remain among the most meaningful in our lives—not just as event curators, but as lifelong admirers of his art.
A Tribute Beyond Words
Today, as we reflect on his passing, our hearts are heavy. The world feels quieter without his rhythm. There will be no more evenings with him… and that truth hurts deeply.
But we refuse to let the silence last.
At Sixteen by Sixty-four, we’ve always believed that events are more than performances — they are memories set to music. And this time, it’s our turn to give back to the man who gave rhythm to our nation.
Announcing the Nationwide Tabla Showdown
In his memory, Sixteen by Sixty-four is proud to announce a nationwide Tabla Showdown—a heartfelt tribute inviting tabla players from across the country to come together and celebrate the rhythm, legacy, and love Ustad Zakir Hussain gave the world.
This is not a competition—it is a salute. A gathering of hands that learned from him, ears that adored him, and hearts that will always carry his beat.
To every tabla artist who grew up watching him, learning from him, dreaming because of him—we invite you. Let’s create an evening he would have smiled at. Let’s play for him, remember him, and keep his rhythm alive.
You will be forever missed, Ustadji. And we will always long for just one more evening with you.
With love and eternal gratitude,
Team Sixteen by Sixty-four
