The Journey of Nipun Dharmadhikari – From Marathi Stagecraft to Global Recognition

Nipun Dharmadhikari stands as a dynamic force in contemporary Indian storytelling, seamlessly blending the realms of theatre, cinema, and digital media. As a playwright, film and web series director, and the visionary behind Sixteen by Sixty-Four Productions, Dharmadhikari has consistently pushed creative boundaries, earning accolades and inspiring audiences across platforms.

Theatrical Roots: Reviving Marathi Stagecraft

Dharmadhikari’s journey began in Pune’s vibrant amateur theatre scene, notably through his participation in the esteemed Purushottam Karandak competition in 2003. In 2009, he co-founded Natak Company, a self-funded and self-managed theatre collective dedicated to exploring the art form rather than commercial pursuits. With a 50-member ensemble, the group has been instrumental in revitalizing traditional Marathi musical dramas (sangeet nataks), presenting them in contemporary five-act formats that resonate with modern audiences. Their innovative productions have not only captivated local audiences but have also been showcased at prestigious events like the Bharat Rang Mahotsav and international festivals in the USA, reflecting Dharmadhikari’s commitment to both preserving and evolving Marathi theatre.

Cinematic Ventures: From Stage to Screen

Transitioning from theatre to film, Dharmadhikari made a significant impact with his directorial debut, Baapjanma (2017), a poignant exploration of familial relationships. This was followed by Dhappa (2019), a film inspired by true events that delves into themes of communal harmony and childhood innocence. Dhappa garnered critical acclaim, earning the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration at the 65th National Film Awards.

His most ambitious project, Me Vasantrao (2022), is a biographical film chronicling the life of Hindustani classical vocalist Vasantrao Deshpande. The film, which took nine years to develop, features Deshpande’s grandson, Rahul Deshpande, in the lead role. Me Vasantrao was not only a critical success but also achieved the rare distinction of being included in the eligibility list for the Academy Awards, marking a significant milestone for Marathi cinema.

Digital Storytelling: Navigating the Web Series Landscape

Expanding his narrative prowess to digital platforms, Dharmadhikari co-directed the Netflix series Mismatched, a coming-of-age romantic drama that has resonated with younger audiences. Further cementing his versatility, he directed the Marathi web series Lampan, which was honoured with the Silver Peacock for Best Web Series at the 55th International Film Festival of India in 2024 .

Sixteen by Sixty-Four Productions: A Vision Realized

Under Dharmadhikari’s leadership, Sixteen by Sixty-Four Productions has emerged as a beacon of innovative storytelling. The production house’s debut film, Baapjanma, set the tone for its commitment to nuanced narratives. Subsequent projects like Dhappa and Me Vasantrao have further solidified its reputation for delivering content that balances artistic integrity with audience engagement.
