Venue : Amanora Entertainment Arena
As the cloud of colour settled over one of Pune’s most progressive art and performance festivals, the SBS team returned exhausted, but quenched and satisfied. Six Indian artists of global acclaim, three evenings of pure art, and an audience that kept asking for more – Gulaal 2013
The festival was inaugurated by none other than Mr. Sharad Pawar at the stunning new Amanora Arena. Reverberations of the mridangam then filled the festive air as Padma Bhushan Alarmel Valli ji owned the stage with her enchanting solo bharatnatyam performance. The curtain fell, and rose to the stunning set of “Between the Lines”, providing the backdrop for Nandita Das and her husband Subodh Maskara to present the smart and sensitive drama.
The second evening of the festival at the Amanora Arena was greeted by the supremely graceful movements of Odissi, as Daksha Mashruwala and her troupe took to stage to present “Samidha”, narrating stories through this gorgeous dance form. People were then held in rapt attention as THE entertainer, Paresh Rawal, took to stage with his hindi play “Krishan vs. Kanhaiya”. The audience left, smiling wide and moved to tears through the play’s humourous yet hard-hitting commentary on religion.
The festival’s final day brought three legendary artists together over a single evening. Dr. Mallika Sarabhai enchanted the audience, along with her troupe from the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, presenting India’s journey through fantastic forms. Shabani Azmi and Javed Akhtar then performed “Kaifi aur Main” – an ode to the venerable Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi, propagated through his poems and live ghazal interludes by Jaswinder Singh.
